So... This weekend we had been planning on going to the beach to snorkel, but we decided to plan a trip to one of Vietnam's Southern islands instead (which you need to fly to). There, we will get to see, swim in, and snorkel some of the country's most beautiful waters!
Bad news first- my wallet has been stolen. A friend and I went out to a bar Friday night, and on our walk home a prostitute approached us. Before I could shoo her away, she was all over us, putting her arm around me, etc, etc. And when I woke up Saturday morning, I realized my wallet was no longer in my pocket. Shame on me for having it in my back pocket, this will NOT happen again. Anyway, right away I canceled my debit card (which had no charges on it) and called the US Consulate/ my Dad for help. A new debit card is on its way to my Mom's house, and I need to go into the consulate to get a new ID. At least my passport is safe :). But if I ever see that woman again....
And now for the good news- today was my first teaching practice day! Teaching practice, or "TP," is when I go into a local English school to practice teaching English. As this was our first visit, each teacher-in-training had to work with just one or two other students. I got two, Sam and Rich! They were a blast, I learned about their families, their favorite foods, animals, sports, movies, etc. One of their mother's names is apparently, "evil mom." Before leaving, they asked me if I was coming back tomorrow, and it killed me to have to say no... but they did ask me to take a picture of them with my phone so I wouldn't forget them.
I had to take a picture of my phone with my webcam, so the quality is bad, but you get the picture.
Uncle Bob- your case is on order.
Keep commenting!!!
hey Max, so with your passport ask if its ok if you make a photocopy and use it as an ID so you don't carry it around all the time. I know some travelers do that with no problem. sorry to hear that happened.
ReplyDeleteHi Max,
ReplyDeleteI guess that was a hard lesson to learn . . . did you ever look over the material I emailed you? It had all sorts of emergency numbers/contacts and advise. (I sent it to DAD too.) I hope you didn't loose too much else!?
Love,
MOM
. . .the boys look cute ! I read on someone else's blog (who is teaching in Vietnam now, too) that he brought rolls of pennies form home to give the children he taught as a little gift. I thought that was a nice idea . . .
ReplyDeleteHi Max, Sorry about the wallet. As you now know the back pocket is the surest way to get it stolen. It's a lesson we all learn the hard way. I'm glad you are doing so well and rnjoying it so much. If you really want to experience heat come back to Jersey. Steel workers would have trouble in this climate !! How's your viet nam language skill? If you're like me you'll know all the dirty words already, (I'm thinking of WWii when I was shipped to the Philippines. Next you are off to Hanoi according ro your mom. That'll be another interesting experience. Stay well. Grandpop
ReplyDeleteHey Max....
ReplyDeleteI just got nack last week from my now annual fishing trip tp Kenia, alaska. We caught plenty of Salmon as our group had at least one king salmon every day. The highlight was my 65lb. King Salmon, measuring at 51 1/2 inches in length and 31 1/2 inches in girth. My buddies quickly talked my into having it made into "fish wine", as it will be stuffed in a bottle and covered in grain alcohol. Sound vaigly familure (snake wine)...lol..anyway it is at the taxidormist in Oregon getting prepared for a place of honor on my wall. I'll send you a pic ...as soon as i can figure out how to email myself a pic from my phone. have fun and cant wait to get my wine!!!! Uncle bob
Does anyone else (who knows "Uncle Bob" laugh while reading his posts??? I vote for "Bob's Blog". : ) Right, Michelle? lol!!!

bummer about the pickpocket prostitute... what kind of a whore takes your money w/o giving a happy ending... it's just not right.
ReplyDelete- stay well, Uncle Steve
Hey Max, I for one think it's a valuable lesson that you got ripped off by a prostitute. As I understand it, this is a rite of passage for all young men. So with that behind you, you can focus on getting those malaria pills!! Love your malaria obsessed Aunt Karen
ReplyDeleteHey Max,
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your wallet being stolen. I'd make a funny joke about it but it seems as everyone has already done so. We've been keeping track of all of your posts and are really enjoying the comments too (Uncle Bob and Uncle Steve). Maybe your next culture post can be about the language... specifically those dirty words that Grandpa keeps talking about?
Stay safe!
Love,
Uncle John, Aunt Joanne, Emily and Kristin
